The Book of Names: People : Dwarves

Dwarves are often imagined as a subterranean people, living in vast halls carved into the hearts of mountains. Their lives are steeped in ancient customs, honor-bound oaths, and familial loyalty. Their mastery of crafting extends from forging unbreakable weapons to inscribing runes of power, and their clans are repositories of ancient knowledge passed through generations. Yet, dwarves are far from a monolith. Across the worlds of fantasy, their cultures shift and vary like veins of ore hidden in the earth.

Dwarvish personas may hail from regions as different as windswept tundras, volcanic caverns, or underground cities filled with crystalline splendor. Some dwarves are devout followers of gods who shaped the earth, while others eschew religion in favor of pragmatism or science. Their societies may be rigid and hierarchical, or they might embrace egalitarian principles. This diversity is reflected in their names, which can range from the guttural and harsh to melodic and lyrical.

Dwarvish names often carry significant weight, reflecting personal achievements, familial lineage, or even the blessings of the gods. First names might evoke strength, endurance, or an aspect of nature, while surnames can tell a story of heritage, deeds, or craftsmanship.
